This test is used to check if a patient reacts to contact with latex or rubber.
A finger cot made of latex or cut from a latex glove is placed on a wet finger during 10-15 minutes, and then watched to see if a reaction of reddening, itching, swelling or hives appear. If not, then a whole glove of latex is used on a wet hand to see if it causes a reaction.
A non-latex finger cot and glove are used at the same time in the other hand to rule out unspecific reactions due to wetness or sweating.
Antihistamines change the results of the test, and should be withdrawn 4-7 days before. If you are scheduled for a use test you should ask your doctor.
